Promoting enjoyment and the joy of good food – this is the slogan of the annual Gourmet Week, which takes place all across Switzerland. As a bastion of cuisine, catering and traditional handicrafts, the Basel region also regularly takes part in Gourmet Week. Discover a wide range of delicious dishes and allow yourself to be drawn into a world of aromas, seasonings and fresh produce.
Gourmet Week (Genusswoche/semaine du goût/settimana del gusto) was launched in 2002 and has taken place in September every year since then, with specific themes. In addition, each canton holds events that focus on regional production and enjoying meals together.
Any business can take part in Gourmet Week and present its authentic products to people. What's more, each year a new "City of Delights" with a "patron of delights" is chosen by application. In 2022, the Rhine city of Basel honoured its title of "City of Delights" with a comprehensive programme.
The canton of Basel-Stadt is renowned for its efforts to promote sustainable, regional nutrition. As early as the Middle Ages, seasonings such as cinnamon and saffron were being traded in the City of Basel. So it stands to reason that Basel was selected as "City of Delights 2022" and treated its visitors to a variety of events under the slogan of "Herbs and Spices". From food talks to tastings and workshops, there is something here to suit every taste.
The "Genussfestival" and the "Slow Food Market", which always take place in the Markthalle at the beginning of the Gourmet Week, are especially popular. Anyone interested can gain insights into old handicraft traditions and indulge themselves to their heart's content at the numerous fresh produce stands. A must for all fans of outstanding food!
Gourmet Week has been a permanent fixture on the annual agenda in the canton of Baselland since 2013. It was even extended to a period of six weeks, as the integrated gourmet events were so incredibly popular.
The Basel Region Gourmet Weeks focus on much more than just eating good food. They aim to maintain gastronomic culture in the Basel region, promote the social aspect and showcase regional producers. Each year, one particular speciality is selected which then forms the basis for the various events surrounding the Basel Region Gourmet Weeks. The events are intended to show that when we eat and enjoy food in company, we not only treat our taste buds but recharge our batteries, too.
